Snout Brings Fresh Adventures to the Game Boy Color via Kickstarter

Retro gaming enthusiasts have a new reason to celebrate: Snout, a charming platformer for the Game Boy Color, has launched on Kickstarter. Developed to run on original hardware, it puts players in the trotters of an eager little pig, navigating colourful levels filled with hidden challenges. You can access the demo for the game here.

The campaign has sparked considerable excitement among collectors who enjoy seeing fresh content on vintage systems. As of today, backers can choose from a digital-only download for around £8 (approximately €9 or $10), a standard physical cartridge tier for roughly £32 (approximately €37 or $40), and a collector’s package set at around £48 (approximately €55 or $60). These pledge levels give fans the flexibility to support Snout in a way that suits their budget, while also ensuring continued interest in new Game Boy titles.

This project is part of a growing trend of indie developers reviving older platforms with brand-new experiences. Over the past few years, other Game Boy Color releases have popped up, demonstrating a renewed creative energy in handheld retro gaming. Enthusiasts note the technical skill required to develop for the Game Boy Color, given its limited memory and modest CPU speed—yet these constraints often inspire clever design choices, with modern coders often pushing the hardware beyond what was seen in its heyday. It is remarkable that, despite the Game Boy Color’s initial release in 1998, fan-driven passion still brings forth titles that can run on genuine hardware today.

Interestingly, the original Game Boy line remained so popular that Nintendo sold over 100 million units worldwide before discontinuation. This enduring appeal speaks volumes about its place in gaming history.

Stars Reach Aims to Revive the Sandbox MMO Glory of Star Wars Galaxies

For retro gaming fans, the closure of Star Wars Galaxies in 2011 left a void that few massively multiplayer online (MMO) games have managed to fill (for me it was when they changed to a levelling based system named the New Game Enhancements aka NGE). That could soon change with Stars Reach, a new sci-fi MMO from Playable Worlds that’s generating buzz among enthusiasts of classic games. Spearheaded by Raph Koster—veteran designer of Ultima Online and Star Wars Galaxies—this ambitious project has already smashed its Kickstarter funding goal in under an hour, proving the appetite for a true sandbox experience remains strong.

A Spiritual Successor to a Retro Classic

Stars Reach is being billed as a spiritual successor to Star Wars Galaxies, a game beloved by retro gaming fans for its open-ended gameplay and player-driven world. Launched in 2003 by Sony Online Entertainment, Star Wars Galaxies let players live out their galactic fantasies as bounty hunters, smugglers, or even musicians, all within a sprawling Star Wars universe. Its shutdown, prompted by the rise of Star Wars: The Old Republic, left many yearning for a modern equivalent. Enter Stars Reach, which promises a vast galaxy where players can explore, build homes, craft goods, and shape their own stories—hallmarks of the sandbox style that defined early MMOs.

Playable Worlds’ Kickstarter pitch emphasises community backing to polish and expand the game. Early access begins at the £23 ($30) pledge tier, while the full release will be free-to-play, supported by optional microtransactions and a subscription for premium features like interplanetary home-building. This hybrid model echoes the evolution of MMOs since the days of EverQuest and Asheron’s Call, balancing accessibility with depth for dedicated players.

Why Retro Gamers Are Excited

The appeal of Stars Reach for retro gaming enthusiasts lies in its roots. Koster’s track record with Ultima Online—one of the first MMOs to prioritise player freedom—suggests a return to form for a genre that’s shifted towards linear, theme-park-style experiences like World of Warcraft. Historical context adds weight: Star Wars Galaxies thrived in an era when MMOs were experimental, offering systems like player-run economies and dynamic events that modern titles often streamline out. Stars Reach aims to recapture that magic, updated for today’s tech.

Though no release date is set, only a date of January 2026 – the Kickstarter’s success—fuelled by fans of retro classics—signals strong momentum. Development updates will be key, as sandbox MMOs require intricate balancing to avoid the pitfalls that plagued some early titles, like server instability or grind-heavy gameplay.

Ratatan: A New Rhythm Adventure Inspired by Patapon

Fans of the beloved PSP rhythm game Patapon have a treat on the horizon. Ratatan, a spiritual successor crafted by Ratata Arts and Tokyo Virtual Theory, promises to revive the magic of commanding armies through musical beats. This highly anticipated title smashed its Kickstarter goal in 2023, raising over $1.5 million, and is now gearing up for a closed beta on February 27, 2025.

Gameplay That Hits All the Right Notes

At its core, Ratatan keeps the rhythm-based mechanics that made Patapon a standout. Players will lead their quirky Cobun armies by tapping out commands to a beat. But this successor isn’t just a nostalgic retread—it brings fresh twists:

  • Online co-op for up to four players, a big leap from Patapon’s solo play.
  • Over 100 unique characters, each with their own skills to master.
  • Roguelike elements, ensuring every run feels unpredictable and replayable.
  • A vibrant story set on the planet Redo, where a goddess’s song shapes a colorful world.

The closed beta, exclusive to Kickstarter backers, will let players dive into the game’s opening stage. While it’s Steam-only for now due to development limits, the full release will hit multiple platforms, including PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, and Nintendo Switch.

A Team With Rhythm in Their DNA

Ratatan isn’t just banking on nostalgia—it’s got the talent to back it up. Key Patapon veterans, like director Hiroyuki Kotani and composer Kenmei Adachi, are steering the ship. Their expertise shines through in the game’s blend of familiar charm and modern flair. The Kickstarter campaign’s success—hitting its funding target in under an hour—unlocked console versions, showing just how much fans believe in this project.

Why Ratatan Stands Out

With its multiplayer focus, Ratatan could redefine rhythm gaming by mixing strategy with social fun. For Patapon diehards, it’s a chance to relive the beat with friends; for newcomers, it’s a fresh entry into a unique genre. Keep an eye on the official Ratatan website as the 2025 full release approaches—this is one rhythm worth following.

Drawing inspiration from the original Resident Evil trilogy, Flesh Made Fear combines fixed and dynamic camera angles, tank controls, and intricate puzzles to recreate the tension and atmosphere of 90s survival horror games. Players will navigate a world filled with grotesque creatures and mind-controlled adversaries, all products of twisted experiments and occult rituals.

The narrative centers on the Reaper Intervention Platoon (R.I.P.), a covert task force assigned to eliminate Victor “The Dripper” Ripper, a former CIA agent turned rogue scientist. His experiments have transformed a secluded town into a nightmare realm. Players can choose between two operatives: Natalie, who has less health but a larger inventory, or Jack, who boasts greater health but a smaller inventory. Each character offers unique storylines and stats, enhancing replayability.

Key features of the game include:

• Classic Survival Horror Mechanics: Fixed and dynamic camera perspectives, limited saves requiring collectible items, and strategic inventory management with access to safe room storage.

• Puzzle-Driven Narrative: Engage with intricate puzzles intertwined with the story, unlocking hidden secrets and new areas.

• Terrifying Adversaries and Arsenal: Face grotesque abominations born of Ripper’s twisted experiments, using weapons like pistols and grenade launchers. Ammo is limited, challenging players’ resourcefulness.

The Kickstarter campaign aims to raise funds for additional features and console ports, allowing backers to support the game’s development and bring this retro-inspired horror experience to a wider audience.

A Wi-FI / AI enabled Game Boy Game “Do you like” is in Development

In a remarkable fusion of retro gaming nostalgia and cutting-edge technology, independent developer Kou is crafting a new mystery adventure titled “Do you like/?” for the Game Boy Color. This ambitious project not only revives Nintendo’s iconic handheld console from 1998 but also integrates modern AI capabilities and Wi-Fi connectivity, offering a unique gaming experience that bridges past and present.

A Retro Console Meets Modern Innovation

The Game Boy Color, celebrated for its role in portable gaming history, ceased production years ago. Yet, “Do you like/?” aims to breathe new life into this classic device. The game employs a Wi-Fi-enabled cartridge, inspired by Sebastian Staacks’ “wifi-game-boy-cartridge,” allowing for real-time AI interactions and dynamic storytelling. Notably, the Wi-Fi module complies with Japanese technical standards, ensuring seamless connectivity.

An AI-Driven Murder Mystery

“Do you like/?” immerses players in a suspenseful narrative where they assume the role of one of four amnesiac characters trapped in a deadly game orchestrated by an AI named Luna. The storyline draws inspiration from the early internet urban legend of the “Red Room,” with AI-generated scenarios that evolve based on player choices and dialogues. This real-time branching narrative promises a personalized and engaging experience, a groundbreaking feature for Game Boy Color titles.

Bilingual Support and Compatibility

The game is being developed with both English and Japanese language options, catering to a diverse audience. While optimized for the Game Boy Color and compatible devices, it’s important to note that the Wi-Fi and AI functionalities may not operate correctly on other hardware.

Crowdfunding Success and Release Timeline

As of now, the Kickstarter campaign for “Do you like/?” has garnered significant support, raising approximately ¥450,000 towards its ¥500,000 goal. With development reported to be 70% complete, the team anticipates delivering the game to backers by March. This project exemplifies a growing trend of indie developers creating new content for vintage gaming systems, blending nostalgia with contemporary technological advancements.
