Ultima VII Revisited: Version 0.1.0 Breathes New Life Into a Classic RPG

Fans of Ultima VII: The Black Gate, one of the most celebrated RPGs of all time, have reason to rejoice with the release of Ultima VII Revisited Version 0.1.0. This ambitious open-source project, spearheaded by ViridianGames, aims to rebuild and enhance the beloved game from the ground up, making it accessible to a modern audience while preserving its intricate world and storytelling.

What is Ultima VII Revisited?

Ultima VII Revisited is an open-source reimplementation of Ultima VII: The Black Gate, originally released by Origin Systems in 1992. Built using modern programming techniques and tools, the project seeks to recreate the original game’s depth and charm while addressing the technical limitations of its early ‘90s engine.

The project is hosted on GitHub, allowing contributors to collaborate on its development, ensuring that the essence of the original remains intact while benefiting from community input.

Key Features of Version 0.1.0

The release of version 0.1.0 marks a significant milestone in the project’s development. Here’s what players can expect:

1. Faithful Reconstruction:

The game world, characters, and iconic storytelling of The Black Gate have been meticulously recreated to mirror the original experience.

2. Modern Compatibility:

No need to struggle with DOSBox or emulators—Ultima VII Revisited runs natively on modern systems, bringing the game’s timeless story to a new generation.

3. Improved UI and Controls:

Updated interface elements and streamlined controls provide a more intuitive experience without sacrificing the game’s classic feel.

4. Open Source Accessibility:

The project is open to community contributions, allowing fans and developers to add their own improvements or features.

Why This Matters

Ultima VII: The Black Gate is often hailed as a masterpiece for its open-world design, compelling characters, and deep narrative. However, running the original game on modern hardware can be challenging due to its reliance on dated software and hardware. Ultima VII Revisitedsolves this problem by bringing the game into the 21st century with updated tools, ensuring it remains playable for years to come.

Version 0.1.0 is just the beginning. While it is a foundational release, it paves the way for future updates, including potential quality-of-life improvements and expansions that build on the original experience.

Getting Started

Interested players can download version 0.1.0 of Ultima VII Revisited directly from its GitHub repository. Installation instructions are detailed on the site, making it easy for newcomers and veterans alike to dive in.

For more insights into the project, visit the official site at Ultima VII Revisited.

GoldenEye X is here for the N64 – Combining Perfect Dark and 007 Offering Coop play and Other Cool Features

GoldenEye X is a remarkable modding endeavour that integrates the gameplay elements of the classic first-person shooter GoldenEye 007 into the engine of Perfect Dark, both originally for the Nintendo 64. This project not only aims to recreate the magic of GoldenEye 007 but enhances it using the more advanced capabilities of the Perfect Dark engine, providing players with an enriched gaming experience on the N64 platform.

Credit: N64 Vault

Key Features:

  • Enhanced Multiplayer: GoldenEye X elevates multiplayer gameplay by integrating Perfect Dark’s mechanics, which include smarter AI for bots or ‘simulants’, additional multiplayer modes like Capture the Flag and King of the Hill, and the ability to play with up to eight computer-controlled opponents. Players can now enjoy classic GoldenEye maps with the added depth of Perfect Dark’s gameplay features, such as refined weapon handling and character customization options.
  • Single-Player Missions: While the modding team has made significant strides in adapting GoldenEye’s single-player missions, currently, nine out of the original twenty missions are fully playable, with special objectives when playing on the 007 difficulty mode. Each mission benefits from new settings, improved animations, and sometimes additional gameplay elements like cooperative play, which wasn’t available in the original GoldenEye. Recent updates have included missions like Silo and Frigate, complete with intros, dynamic dialogues, weather effects, and fully functioning objectives based on the difficulty level.
  • Ongoing Development: The project is in active development, with a community of modders regularly updating the mod to fix bugs, enhance gameplay, and add new content. Updates include new texture packs, sound improvements, and unique gameplay tweaks. For instance, the latest update, version 6a, has introduced cooperative campaign support across all available levels, showcasing the community’s commitment to expanding the mod’s offerings.
  • VR Mode and Challenges: GoldenEye X also includes a VR (Virtual Reality) mode where all Bond characters from the franchise are playable, offering a nostalgic nod to the original game’s beloved characters. There are also ‘Assignments’ similar to challenges, providing players with varied objectives in this mode.
  • Visual and Audio Enhancements: Players can enjoy enhanced visual effects like dynamic lighting, weather changes, and environmental interactions (like snow falling in Severnaya). Additionally, new sound effects, voice-overs, and music remixes from both games contribute to an immersive experience.

Getting Started:

  • Original ROMs: You’ll need legally obtained ROMs of both Perfect Dark and GoldenEye 007.
  • Patch Application: The modding community provides tools like the GoldenEditor/Perfect Editor to patch the Perfect Dark ROM with GoldenEye X.
  • Emulator or Hardware: The patched ROM can be run using an N64 emulator for modern systems or on original hardware with a flash cartridge like the Everdrive 64 for an authentic feel.

For those interested in diving into GoldenEye X, the latest patches and detailed instructions can be found on the N64 Vault website.

Community and Contributions:

GoldenEye X is a labour of love by a dedicated community of modders and gamers who are passionate about preserving and enhancing the legacy of these classic N64 titles. They actively seek feedback, contributions for voice acting, and other forms of community involvement to keep the project vibrant. The mod not only brings back memories but also introduces these legendary games to new players with modernized gameplay features.

This mod stands out as a testament to what can be achieved through fan-led development, offering a unique blend of nostalgia and innovation.
