Dreamcast Minecraft Developer Showcases Insanely Fast Voxel Engine

A developer known as Meesedev is creating a voxel engine, dubbed the Meese Engine, inspired by Minecraft beta 1.7.3. The goal is to build an engine capable of handling voxel-based games, eventually replacing Minecraft assets with original ones to create a new game surpassing Minecraft in both gameplay and graphical fidelity.

In a recent update, Meesedev showcased the engine’s performance, “blasting through an existing world file at 2,800 km/h, holding a perfect 60fps with a 64-chunk render distance.” This demonstration was conducted on the PC port of the GameCube version of the engine.

The developer has also implemented “world saving and loading” features, enabling the engine to load “14,000 chunks (~500 million blocks) in just a few seconds,” sufficient for a 64-chunk render distance. Notably, Meesedev dedicates only one day per week to this project, making the progress particularly impressive.

While the Meese Engine is not planned to be fully open source, Meesedev has indicated that some smaller components might be made open source in the future.

Yuji Naka Surprises Fans with Update to Eight-Year-Old Mobile Game

In an unexpected move, Yuji Naka, co-creator of Sonic the Hedgehog, has released an update for his 2016 mobile game, Pirates of Coin. Announced on X (formerly Twitter), Naka detailed the technical challenges he faced in modernizing the game. Originally built using Unity 5, the update required significant revisions, including transitioning from JavaScript to C# and addressing numerous deprecated features to ensure compatibility with newer Unity versions.

This update is particularly noteworthy given Naka’s current legal circumstances. In July 2023, he received a 30-month prison sentence, suspended for four years, and was fined ¥173 million (approximately $1.2 million) after pleading guilty to insider trading during his tenure at Square Enix. Despite these challenges, Naka’s commitment to his earlier projects remains evident.

Pirates of Coin was developed by Prope, the independent studio Naka founded after departing from Sega. The game offers players a coin-pusher experience set against a pirate-themed backdrop, combining elements of chance and strategy. While it didn’t make significant waves upon its initial release, this recent update may rekindle interest among mobile gaming enthusiasts.

As of now, Naka has not disclosed any future game development plans. However, this recent activity suggests that he remains engaged with the gaming community, even amidst personal challenges.

Earnest Evans & Annet Returns Get Official English Releases

Two Sega CD cult classics, Earnest Evans and Annet Returns, are finally receiving official English releases, thanks to Limited Run Games. These side-scrolling action titles, which originally launched in Japan in the early 1990s, have never been officially localized—until now.

A Long Time Coming for Earnest Evans & Annet Returns

Originally developed by Wolf Team, Earnest Evans (1991) and Annet Returns (1993) are part of the El Viento series, a lesser-known but beloved trilogy in retro gaming circles. Earnest Evans puts players in the shoes of an Indiana Jones-style adventurer with a unique, segmented sprite animation style that has divided players for decades. Meanwhile, Annet Returns follows the story of Annet Myer, a powerful sorceress wielding magic-infused weaponry in fast-paced side-scrolling combat.

Despite their niche appeal, these titles have remained largely inaccessible to Western audiences outside of fan translations. That changes now, as Limited Run Games has officially announced physical editions for the Sega CD, complete with English text and improved presentation.

Limited Run’s Physical Editions

Both games will be available in standard and collector’s editions, featuring restored artwork and special extras. Earnest Evans is listed at $59.99, while Annet Returns shares the same price point. Given the high demand for retro Sega CD titles, these are expected to sell quickly.

For collectors and fans of obscure Sega gems, this marks an exciting moment. The Sega CD library has long been overlooked, and official English releases of Japanese-exclusive titles are rare. With this move, Limited Run Games continues to support retro preservation in a way that few companies do.

New Skies of Arcadia Patch Delivers the Ultimate 60Hz Multi-Language Experience

New Skies of Arcadia Patch Delivers the Ultimate 60Hz Multi-Language Experience

A new fan patch for Skies of Arcadia offers the most refined version of the Dreamcast classic, fixing long-standing issues from previous 60Hz conversions. This update fully restores proper animation timings, corrects audio sync issues, and ensures seamless performance across all display modes—including RGB, VGA, and composite—while supporting multiple languages.

This patch builds upon the earlier 60Hz PAL conversion by Japanese_cake but goes a step further by undoing PAL-specific optimizations. The result is a version of Skies of Arcadia that runs identically to the original NTSC releases while allowing players to experience the game in English, Spanish, German, or French at a smooth 60Hz refresh rate.

Key improvements include:

• Perfectly Synced Cutscenes – Audio is now in complete sync with the NTSC releases, eliminating the delays found in the previous patch.

• Restored Sound Effects – SFX have been reverted to match the original NTSC versions, correcting distortions caused by PAL adjustments.

• Accurate Movement Speed – Walking speed now mirrors the JP/US releases, ensuring a faithful gameplay experience.

• Full 60Hz Display Support – Works flawlessly with RGB, VGA, and composite video on all region Dreamcast consoles.

• Region-Free Compatibility – Playable on any Dreamcast without modification.

For those looking for additional enhancements, Skye from the Skies of Arcadia Discord is developing a quality-of-life patch based on this release. It aims to restore censored content, adjust the high encounter rate, and reintroduce the original website functionality.

You can view the patch notes here, and download the new release here.

For now, if you’re seeking the ultimate Skies of Arcadia experience with perfect 60Hz performance, this patch is the definitive way to play.

Daytona USA 2 Finally Gets a Home Release—Sort Of

The legendary Daytona USA 2 is breaking free from its arcade exclusivity to join the swashbuckling adventure of Like a Dragon: Pirate in Yakuza in Hawaii. This 1998 racing gem, never before ported from its Model 3 hardware, is now part of the pirate-themed Yakuza escapade set in Hawaii.

One of the best arcade racers ever..?

Unlike the original Daytona USA, which saw ports to the Sega Saturn, Dreamcast, and even modern platforms, Daytona USA 2 never made it beyond its Model 3 arcade roots. This marks the first time fans can experience the high-speed action of Battle on the Edge and Power Edition without hunting down a vintage arcade machine.

In Like a Dragon: Pirate in Yakuza in Hawaii, players can not only navigate the high seas but also dive into in-game arcades to experience Daytona USA 2, including “Battle on the Edge” and “Power Edition”. This marks a historic moment for fans who’ve longed to play this game without the need for a vintage arcade cabinet.

While it’s uncertain if it’s an emulated or recreated version, what’s clear is that this fusion of Daytona USA 2 with the pirate adventure of Like a Dragon: Pirate in Yakuza in Hawaii is a unique blend of nostalgia and new thrills. Set sail with Goro Majima on February 21st, 2025, for an experience where racing and piracy collide spectacularly.

Flea 2 Brings More Retro Platforming Madness to the Dreamcast and NES

Indie developer Lowtek Games is back with Flea 2, a sequel to their 2020 retro platformer, bringing even more flea-jumping action to the Dreamcast and NES. Continuing the adventures of Henry the flea, this installment introduces new mechanics, levels, and characters while keeping the challenging, fast-paced gameplay intact.

Following in the footsteps of its predecessor, Flea 2 offers tight, responsive controls and a unique jumping mechanic where Henry bounces uncontrollably, requiring precise timing to navigate obstacles and enemies. This time around, the game features a branching level system, allowing players to explore different paths as they collect blood packs and avoid deadly hazards.

The game is being developed for both the NES and Dreamcast, with physical copies available for collectors. NES cartridges are being made in limited batches, while Dreamcast editions come with a full-colour manual and case, embracing the spirit of classic releases.

Reviews from early players highlight Flea 2’s quirky pixel-art style, catchy chiptune soundtrack, and satisfying difficulty curve. The game maintains the retro aesthetic while introducing quality-of-life improvements, including optional paths for less experienced players.

Flea 2 is currently available on Steam as well, making it accessible to a wider audience beyond the original hardware. For fans of NES-style platformers and those who appreciate the thriving homebrew scene, this is one to watch.

Dream Ride: A New Micro Machines-Style Party Racer for the Dreamcast

The Sega Dreamcast continues to defy time, with a steady flow of new indie releases keeping the console alive. The latest addition is Dream Ride, an arcade-style party racer inspired by the classic Micro Machines series. Developed by Dream Quest Games, the title promises fast-paced, top-down multiplayer racing with chaotic twists.

“Dream Ride” supports single-player and multiplayer modes, accommodating up to four human players and eight CPU opponents. The game includes eight unique cars, each with distinct handling and speed, and features four different game modes.

Credit: Itch IO / Ginger Beard Man

The gameplay in “Dream Ride” emphasizes momentum and drift, requiring players to adapt to each vehicle’s characteristics. Power-ups such as magnets, ghosts, shields, and speed boosts are integral, with hazards like oil slicks and thunderbolts adding strategic depth.

The game runs at a consistent 60 frames per second, with dynamic sound effects and CD audio music. It also includes a cheat system for additional gameplay options. “Dream Ride” is playable on both original Dreamcast hardware and emulators, and is also compatible with Windows, macOS, Linux, and Android platforms. It can be downloaded from gingerbeardman’s itch.io page under a “name-your-own-price” model.

The release of “Dream Ride” follows the trend of indie games revitalizing the Dreamcast, with titles like “Xeno Crisis”, “Intrepid Izzy”, and “Rush Rush Rally Reloaded” also contributing to the console’s ongoing legacy.
