Nintendo Slips Out of Metacritic’s Top 20 of 2024

Nintendo, historically revered for its consistently polished releases, has slipped outside the top 20 in Metacritic’s 15th Annual Game Publisher Rankings. The news has come as a shock to long-time followers who have come to expect high scores for the company’s titles, many of which have roots stretching back to the 1980s and beyond. Metacritic’s annual ranking analyses critical reception and overall performance, making Nintendo’s lower placement a notable departure from its usual standing near the top.

The 2025 ranking suggests that the publisher’s newer releases, while not necessarily lacking in quality, have not reached the stellar acclaim of previous generations. Still, this could be influenced by the competitive nature of the modern gaming landscape, where publishers vie for attention across multiple platforms.

Though the rankings are surprising, many believe Nintendo’s legacy of imaginative gameplay and focus on hardware innovation will endure. After all, the gaming giant has weathered various market cycles since its early ventures, including its transition from playing card production to pioneering family-friendly consoles. Whether it’s the ongoing popularity of Super Smash Bros. tournaments or enduring fan communities sharing tips, gaming history shows that a single ranking rarely defines a publisher’s overall standing in the long run.

Zelda’s SNES Classic ‘A Link to the Past’ Joins Nintendo Music: The Must-Listen Tracks

Nintendo has recently made the iconic soundtrack from The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past available on its official Nintendo Music platform, a welcome treat for fans for of this legendary game . First released in 1991 on the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES), A Link to the Past quickly established itself as one of the pivotal entries in the series. Its unforgettable score, composed by the renowned Koji Kondo, has been lauded for capturing the spirit of exploration and the grandeur of Hyrule’s landscapes.

Arguably the most recognisable piece is the “Overworld Theme,” featuring a rousing melody that perfectly embodies Link’s heroic journey. Listeners often cite the “Dark World Theme” as another standout track, bringing an edgy, sombre layer to the adventure, hinting at the hidden dangers of the alternate realm. The gentle, almost homely tune of “Kakariko Village” offers a contrast to the game’s more intense moments, providing a sense of respite amidst the chaos. Likewise, “Hyrule Castle” and its regal progressions underline the weight of Link’s quest to save Princess Zelda.

Technically, the SNES’s audio hardware (utilising the SPC700 sound chip) allowed Koji Kondo’s compositions to shine in more nuanced ways than the original Nintendo Entertainment System ever could. Despite limitations such as a mere eight channels, the sound team’s creativity resulted in a rich, layered soundtrack that continues to resonate with retro gaming fans. A Link to the Past also influenced subsequent Zelda soundtracks, setting the bar for orchestration and thematic cohesion in future instalments.

As of February 27, 2025, the full collection can now be streamed officially, giving newcomers and long-time devotees a chance to revisit these defining compositions. With each track, one is reminded of how music can elevate gameplay into a truly immersive experience, and take you back to playing the game – even decades after a title’s original release.

Legendary Star Fox and Zelda Developer Emphasizes Creativity Over Budget

The legendary developer behind Star Fox and The Legend of Zelda – Takaya Imamura – has recently shared insights into game development, arguing that a massive budget doesn’t necessarily equate to a great game. Instead, the key to success lies in strong, innovative ideas.

During a recent discussion (credit to Games Radar), the developer pointed out that some of the most memorable games in history were built on creative ingenuity rather than unlimited financial resources. While large budgets can provide access to cutting-edge technology and expansive content, they don’t guarantee engaging gameplay or a compelling experience. According to the veteran designer, the best games stem from a foundation of strong concepts, regardless of funding.

This perspective resonates strongly with many classic Nintendo titles, which often thrived on gameplay innovation rather than sheer production scale. Star Fox, for example, was revolutionary in its time for pioneering 3D graphics on the SNES, all while operating under tight hardware constraints. Similarly, The Legend of Zelda series has continually pushed boundaries with new mechanics and design philosophies, demonstrating that great ideas often outshine technical limitations.

In today’s gaming landscape, where high-budget AAA games sometimes struggle to deliver on expectations, these words serve as a reminder that creativity remains the heart of game development. Many indie studios have proven this point by producing critically acclaimed games on modest budgets, often focusing on unique gameplay mechanics or storytelling approaches that set them apart.

Ultimately, this insight reinforces the idea that game design is an art form, where vision and execution matter more than the size of the development budget. While financial resources can enhance a game’s production values, it’s the underlying creativity that truly determines its success.

Imamura’s tenure at Nintendo spanned over three decades, during which he contributed significantly to series such as F-Zero and The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask. Reflecting on his departure in 2021, he acknowledged the challenges of managing a company with numerous creators and highlighted the necessity of charismatic leadership to maintain smooth operations.

While expressing confidence in Nintendo’s current leadership, Imamura’s remarks serve as a reminder that the strength of a franchise lies not just in its name but in the creative minds that develop its games. This perspective resonates in an industry where layoffs are common, underscoring the need to value and support the talent that drives innovation and maintains the quality of beloved series.

As Nintendo continues to develop new entries in its flagship series, Imamura’s insights highlight the importance of nurturing and recognising the creators who bring these games to life. After all, it’s the passion and creativity of these individuals that transform a popular IP into an engaging and memorable experience for players.
